GROUP THERAPY under PDPM will be defined as “a qualified rehabilitation therapist or therapy assistant treating two to six patients at the same time who are performing the same or similar activities.”
CONCURRENT THERAPY is defined under Medicare Part A as “the treatment of two residents, who are not performing the same or similar activities, at the same time, regardless of payor source, both of whom must be in the line-of-sight of the treating therapist or assistant.”
Group and Concurrent Therapy under the Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM)
PDPM allows a combined 25% limit on group and concurrent therapy per discipline.
Therapy in these formats must:
• Be meaningful to each patient’s POC
• Involve skilled judgment by a licensed clinician
• Be provided with the goal to improve patient independence while maintaining safety
These modes of therapy delivery offer distinct benefit to patients which may include:
• Increased motivation
• New skill acquisition and carry-over
• Greater self-reliance
• Peer support
