Improving Balance and Functional Mobility

This 76-year-old gentleman was referred to a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation due to muscle weakness, difficulty walking, and decreased safety. He was hospitalized for three days after a fall at home. His history of Parkinson’s Disease and arthritis contributed to his unsafe mobility. Prior to hospitalization he lived in a single story home with three steps and a handrail to enter and was independent with all functional tasks and driving.
Occupational Therapy: (5x/week x 2 weeks)
OmniVR® Virtual Rehabilitation System
- Lower extremity strengthening using Picnic virtual reality (VR) exercise
- Transfer training using Bingo VR exercise
- Balance and gait using City Walk and Carnival VR exercise
Additional Interventions
- Strengthening, gait training, balance training, and therapeutic exercise

This gentleman is very happy with his accomplishments in therapy which have allowed him to return to his home! He reports he “liked competing with other patients on the OmniVR®. It was fun and motivating!” His therapist reports he was so engrossed in the activities on the screen that he completed higher intensity exercise as a result.
