Utilizing Multi-Center Rehabilitation and State-of-the Art Technology to Improve Mobility and Swallowing After COVID-19 with Respiratory Failure

This 70-year-old gentleman was hospitalized for several months due to COVID-19 with acute respiratory failure and pneumonia. During hospitalization, a tracheostomy (tube inserted into the trachea for breathing) was performed and a ventilator was used. He developed difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) and a feeding tube was also placed. Prior to his hospitalization, he lived at home with his wife, was independent with all mobility, and ate a regular diet.

This gentleman was referred to Bland Nursing & Rehab (BNR) for therapy services as he had severe debility and was bed bound. He made great advancements there, including improved strength, being weaned off the ventilator, and transitioning to a modified diet with occasional supplementation from the feeding tube. As a result of his progress, he elected to transfer to Mulberry Creek Nursing & Rehab (MCNR) where he was confident his excellent care would continue, and he would be closer to his family for added support.
