Impact of Nutrition and Pharmacology on Frailty
Dysphagia Dadvanced Professional EventsFrailty is a syndrome affecting overall health and quality of life in the geriatric population. Deficiencies in nutrient, energy, and protein intake, coupled with use of modified diets can lead to malnutrition in persons with frailty. The use of multiple medications to address this decline in function is common, with many of these medications causing symptoms of or inducing dysphagia. This course provides an overview of risk factors and the pathophysiology involved in frailty, common medications causing clinical symptoms of dysphagia, consequences of altered diets on nutrition, and the key role speech-language pathologists play in leveraging existing evidence-based interventions to facilitate optimal outcomes for persons with frailty.
