Celebrating 100 Years of Occupational Therapy

Celebrating 100 Years of Occupational Therapy

In 2017 the profession of occupational therapy (OT) and its professional organization, the American
Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), turn 100. To commemorate the anniversary, the AOTA
designed a centennial vision to serve as a road map for the future of the profession: “We envision that
occupational therapy is a powerful, widely recognized, science-driven, and evidence-based profession
with a globally connected and diverse workforce meeting society’s occupational needs.”¹

One of the primary areas of focus in the OT profession is improving activities of daily living (ADLs) to
advance patient independence and functional levels. ACP empowers occupational therapists through
evidence-based, science-driven clinical programs and technologically advanced equipment to improve
patient functional outcomes to higher levels. ACP programs, enhanced by the Omnicycle®, OmniVR®,
and OmniStand™, can be instrumental in an occupational therapy program to achieve these outcomes.

To facilitate participation in activities of daily living and positively
impact quality of life, upper extremity cycling with the Omnicycle
combined with Patterned Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation
(PENS) to improve timing and aerobic capacity, can provide
therapeutic intervention for patients across the spectrum of health,
from the most debilitated to the most able-bodied.

Patients receiving upper extremity virtual reality activities had
significantly greater FIM self-care scores (eating, grooming,
bathing, dressing, and toileting) compared to patients receiving
standard therapy, according to post-stroke research.² The OmniVR
virtual reality augmented therapy system was developed to
accommodate the needs of medically complex patients, including
                 aging adults.

and standing tolerance activities with the fall-safe design of
                 the OmniStand.
